Magical Fairytales Through Music: The Orchestra of Southern Utah’s February Concert
By Tanisa Crosby

The Orchestra of Southern Utah has been hard at work preparing for a concert that no one will want to end.  “Memorable Music Tales” is the theme for February’s concert and it’s one the Orchestra has been enjoying immensely.  From big time film scores to music that tells a story from one note to the next, members of the Orchestra have been thrilled to experience magic and even more thrilled to share that magic with an audience on February 21st.
On the agenda for this concert will be a medley from Lord of the Rings.  The Orchestra will embark with the fellowship and play with hobbits as they bring the J.R.Tolkein story  to life on the stage.  They will also perform popular tunes that many know from classic cartoons such as the waltz from Sleeping Beauty and selections from Swan Lake, both by Tchaikovsky.  Originally depicted  through ballet, the Orchestra is delighted to tell these beloved stories on the stage with music. SUU dancers join the orchestra for two of the pieces. Another story that will be told through music will be the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale of Hansel and Gretel, in the overture to the opera by Engelbert Humperdinck.  With whimsical melodies, this piece will have the audience transported to a world full of magic and wonder.
This concert will also feature International Ballerina, Dance Artist, Choreographer, and Teacher Michelle Ramos. Ramos is a performance and choreography specialist with a focus on ballet, contemporary ballet, and the development of the MindBody as an instrument of art.  “My work as a dancer and choreographer is based on experience, observation and imagination. I strive to find the extraordinary in the ordinary,” Ramos wrote in her artist statement on her website. “I play with the possibilities and share the result with the audience, hoping it will leave a meaningful imprint on their lives, that it may be of use to all of us.”
The Orchestra along-side the children’s choir will also perform Peter Pan Suite from the motion picture Peter Pan.  This piece features the story of Peter Pan and will also be narrated, telling the story of our much loved characters Peter Pan, The Darling Children, Tinkerbell, and Captain Hook.  With James Newton Howard’s beautiful orchestration the audience will be transported to Neverland with live narration and accompaniment by the children’s choir.  An enchanting and magical number you don’t want to miss.
The “Memorable Music Tales” concert will take place on Thursday February 21st, at 7:30 pm and will take place at the Heritage Center Theatre(105 N 100 E, Cedar City, UT, located behind Lins).  Tickets cost $12 for adults and $6 for students.  Children 6 and older are welcome to attend with adult supervision. No babies please as the concerts are recorded.  For more information contact OSU Manager Rebekah Hughes at (435)592-6051 or osucedarcity@gmail.com
