"I have recently returned to Cedar City
after 2 years of teaching in Chengdu, China. While in China I used music and
movement to teach English at Shishi High schools and Jr. High schools
throughout the city of Chengdu. I performed cello recitals to teach concert
etiquette and vocabulary as well as entertaining in a variety of unique places.
The busy streets, friendly people, beautiful landscapes, charming ancient
villages, and enthusiastic students and audiences touched my life forever and
gave me a new perspective about life, music, friendship and families. I
love traditional Chinese music and fell in love with the Erhu as well. No doubt
this experience in China improved my self-esteem, teaching skills and ability
to reach past the comfort of my own fears."
Marla McMaster |
Marla McMaster enjoys singing with anyone who will sing or play instruments with her. If you happen by her house, you might end up singing or playing a song with her. She has performed in trio, women's groups, and choruses in Japan, Alaska, and California. She has soloed in a broadcast throughout Honshu, Japan. She has also soloed in the Messiah each year, performed Rachmaninoff Vocalise with orchestra accompaniment, has performed and recorded with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and in a trio doing a reduced version of the chorus of Pagliacci, where she toured with the intimate Opera Company to Kansas. She more recently played Maria in the Sound of Music. Marla attributes part of her love of classical music to her experience in the Salt Lake Children's Choir, where she enjoyed gaining a classical background. Marla was somewhat hyper as a young child, but classical music grabbed her attention and completely engaged and mesmerized her. Marla also coaches a swim team and enjoys doing sprint triathlons and playing the violin.
