Matinée: Saturday, Feb. 15, “Where
Dreams are Born”
The
Orchestra of Southern Utah’s 11th Annual Children’s Jubilee provides a family
friendly afternoon of music, art and science. Lobby displays open at 1 p.m., music on stage with
full symphony orchestra including Flickers silent movies at 2 p.m., followed by
hands-on art and science activities designed to delight the whole family. Admission is $5 per person and babies
are free. Three cans of food gives
one free admission per family to assist Iron County Care and Share as part of
the Orchestras Feeding America initiative.
Dr.
Xun Sun directs the orchestra in three great classics for the children: A
Night on Bald Mountain by
Mussorgsky, Hall of the Mountain King by Grieg, and Danse Infernal plus Finale from the Firebird
Suite by Stravinsky. The music and
silent films have been coordinated by Video Ideas of Tennessee, who created the
visual enhancement for the Spanish Trail Suite for a previous OSU performance. Steven Swift is helping to add
additional comedies to the presentation with an emphasis on Charlie Chaplin.
Lobby
displays include Cedar Music Store and Studio, Usborne Books, a costume area
for children, Artful Orchestra from Gateway Preparatory Academy, movie display
by South Elementary students, historical movie posters from Frontier Homestead
Museum, face painting, and other activities. Science activities are being coordinated by Laura Cotts and
include several SUU faculty and students as well as the Garth and Jerri Frehner
Museum of Natural History and Animal Ambassadors. Art activities are designed and facilitated by SUU
Elementary Education students under the direction of Ivy Kiley. Dr. Matt Weeg and Dr. Troy Stonely are
also assisting the science portion of the afternoon. Music in the lobby features percussionist Jason Gottfried.
The
League of American Orchestras has recognized the OSU Jubilees as outstanding
education experiences at national conferences. “We basically create a one day children’s museum for the
children thanks to all of the volunteers and partner organizations,” said Sara
Penny, OSU Assistant.
Color Country Pediatrics and RAP
(Recreation, Arts, and Parks) are the major sponsors for the Children’s Jubilee
with media sponsorship by Utah Public Radio. Poster design by Rollan Fell.
Emily
Hepworth, OSU Manager, and Steve Swift, recording engineer, are also presenting
several school assemblies in the week prior to the Jubilee to share “Movie
Magic” with students.

“To the Stars” Evening
Performance on Thursday, Feb. 20
The complete Flickers film set with
all of the music is set for Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage
Center. The emphasis will be on
comedies.
