Everyone a Superhero

for the Orchestra of Southern Utah’s Children’s Jubilee

By Tanisa Crosby

One thing that is great about music is that it connects people of all ages. One can never be too young to really start to dive into music, which is why the Orchestra of Southern Utah loves the annual Children’s Jubilee. Children of all ages are invited to various activities and experience the thrill of live orchestral music. This year, the theme for the Jubilee and Concert is “Everyone a Superhero” and will take place on February 13th at 1 PM at the Heritage Center Theatre in Cedar City, UT.

With this year’s theme, Everyone a Superhero, there will be fun activities centered on the theme of superheroes starting at 1 PM.  The Orchestra of Southern Utah will host several STEAM centered activities, an adaptation on the well known “STEM” acronym. Activities will include science demonstrations and a museum display, which families are welcome to watch and explore. While the activities will not be hands on, something the jubilee is well known for, children will receive bags of take home activities and goodies.

Families and children are encouraged to come dressed up as their favorite superheroes.

At 2 PM, the concert hall will be opened and everyone can then come enjoy a mini-concert put on by the Orchestra. Cellomania USA will open the concert with the Theme from Transformers, Nina Hansen, the founder of Cellomania and a cellist from the Orchestra, started the group in 2006 to help students learn the cello beyond what they learn in the classroom. “Playing in a cello choir is an experience like no other.” Nina Hansen explained, “It is the golden moment of playing the cello. It provides opportunities for growth in intonation, rhythm, technical skills, team work, spatial awareness and overall musicality.” In the past, Cellomania has performed across Iron County and even traveled to places such as Disneyland in California and performed in Changsha, Xi'an and near Beijing on the Great Wall of China. Nina added, “kids in Cedar City will love to see other kids playing really cool music, wearing really cool outfits, and having a great time on their instruments.”

The Orchestra under the direction of Conductor Carylee Zwang will play highlights of scores from Superman Returns, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Star Wars.

The Children’s Jubilee will take place on February 13th at 1 PM at the Heritage Center Theatre, located at 105 N 100 E, Cedar City, UT, (behind Lins). Tickets are $5 for both adults and students and can be purchased at www.myosu.org or at the door; families can also get a free ticket if they bring in 3 cans of food to donate for Iron County Care and Share. Babies are welcome for this concert and have free admittance.  The audience is limited to 220, for safe attendance, and masks are required in the concert hall. Due to the limits in seating it is recommended to purchase tickets in advance online.

Thanks to sponsors Rocky Mountain Power and the Sorenson Legacy Foundation for helping make this family event possible. Donations are always welcome, and especially this year as we have had extra safety expenses this season to protect the musicians and patrons.

Art Contest for "Everyone a Superhero" Jubilee: entries due Jan. 29

Dear students, parents, and teachers,

The Orchestra of Southern Utah is holding a contest and we invite you to join us!

Every year, OSU holds a Children’s Jubilee with fun activities and a shortened concert for kids. This year, the Jubilee will be February 13th, from 1-3pm, at the Heritage Theater. Due to current circumstances, in lieu of our regular yearly visit to schools before the Jubilee, this time we’re doing things a little differently.

Our theme this year is “Everyone a Superhero.” We are having a contest and we want you to participate! For elementary school aged kids, we’d like you to design a superhero costume. For middle and high school kids, we invite you to turn in your choice of a superhero comic strip or superhero costume. You can start from scratch or you can use the template provided, and you can use any material
or format you want.

There will be one winner per grade, in addition to a grand prize and runner up. Prizes are being
donated from local businesses and will consist of either a cash card or gift card. Prizes are as follows:
