Create Your Own Legacy Children’s Jubilee
on February 11 Continues Tradition of Fun for Families
by Kristin Beauchamp-Butt

The Orchestra of Southern Utah’s 14th annual Children’s Jubilee, Create Your Own Legacy, takes the stage on February 11. This family-friendly indoor event features art, science, and music activities for all ages with a concert performed by a full symphony orchestra. The event has been nationally recognized by the League of American Orchestras for its multifaceted approach to building community and incorporating both science and the arts. Included in the concert are selections from the world premiere of Valley of Enchantment and the William Tell Overture by Rossini complete with science experiments by Brandon Wiggins, lower photo.

Valley of Enchantment is an original composition by Mark Dal Porto, upper photo, commissioned by the OSU and inspired by the dramatic landscapes of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. The William Tell Overture offers a unique experience as guest scientist Brandon Wiggins provides live onstage accompaniment in the form of science experiments. The energetic Xun Sun conducts, encouraging young musicians with his excitement and enthusiasm for music.

Create Your Own Legacy highlights the ability imagine and innovate. Our STEAM activities inspire children (and adults) to create amazing art, science, and technology! Come try to play an instrument at Cedar Music’s Instrument Petting Zoo, then go pet a real snake with SUU’s Animal Ambassadors. Explore the galaxy with the SUU planetarium. Join the Frehner Museum of Natural History for hands on science activities and even more! The first 200 children will get prism rainbow glasses.

Lobby displays and the SUU Planetarium open at 1 p.m. and the concert begins at 2 p.m. Art and science activities follow until 4:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $5 for children, and no charge for babies. One free admission with three cans of food to benefit Care and Share. The event is held at the Heritage Theater in Cedar bringing City and is made possible with the sponsorship of the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation and the generous volunteer effort of community members, orchestra musicians, and SUU students and faculty.

A Joyful Noise: Instrument Drive and MLK Jr. Day Celebration

Thanks to everyone who participated in the program on Jan. 16, 2016 and a special thanks to those who have given instruments which we will get to schools for lower income students. We are excited to share our love of music with these students. We also had $160 donations to use for instrument repairs, 92 in attendance, and 24 pounds of food which has been delivered to Iron County Care and Share. Music supplies for both band and orchestra programs are also being donated. In addition to the items in photos we also got an electronic keyboard.  We had a great response to this project and it is very much appreciated. This service project was inspired by the 2017 MLK National Day of Service under UServeUtah.  OSU and community donations have made the project possible.

Donated Instruments also included another trombone, student violin and keyboard.

More of the donated instruments.  Thanks so much for helping.
